It is not, as the title might suggest, a Samurai-era swordsman thriller, nor is it a Bronson-style revenge tale, with a black-and-white contrast between the avenger and the evildoers. It is a rich, intricate drama, yet the film's psychological complexity never impedes suspense or momentum, and the ending is powerful indeed. The acting is superb, with the role of the vengeful father posing especially great challenges, not unlike the challenges which Max von Sydow so memorably met in a similar scenario in Bergman's great Virgin Spring half a century ago.
